Movie: Dogtooth
7:00 pm - Structural and Materials Engineering Building, Room 306 [Map]
HSA Cine Club invites you to watch the Oscar nominated "Dogtooth" (year: 2009; duration:103'; English subtitles), Giorgos Lanthimos bizarre movie presenting an extreme case of parental protectiveness. Three teenagers are confined to an isolated country estate that could very well be on another planet. The trio spend their days listening to endless homemade tapes that teach them a whole new vocabulary. Any word that comes from beyond their family abode is instantly assigned a new meaning. Hence 'the sea' refers to a large armchair and 'zombies' are little yellow flowers. Having invented a brother whom they claim to have ostracized for his disobedience, the über-controlling parents terrorize their offspring into submission. The father is the only family member who can leave the manicured lawns of their self-inflicted exile, earning their keep by managing a nearby factory, while the only outsider allowed on the premises is his colleague Christina, who is paid to relieve the son of his male urges. Tired of these dutiful acts of carnality, Christina disturbs the domestic balance. Dogtooth is an R-rated movie. There exist few scenes of violence and bloodletting but it has many extreme underlying concepts. We acknowledge the oddity of the movie, but, Dogtooth is the only greek Oscar nomination for the past 30 years and Lanthimos is an internationally recognized contemporary greek director, which render Dogtooth a must-see movie!

Pizza and beverages will be provided thanks to UCSD's Graduate Student Association!
Movie: Plato's Academy
7:00 pm - Structural and Materials Engineering Building, Room 306 [Map]
HSA Cine Club invites you to watch "Plato's Academy", Filippos Tsitos' comedy that narrates the story of the kiosk-keeper Stavros (Antonis Kafetzopoulos) who is "cool as Greek..." Every day, Stavros raises the metal shutters of his kiosk, puts out the newspapers and arranges the chairs on which he and his friends sit all day looking at passers by and enjoying the way their dog Patriot, on the opposite pavement, barks at Albanians that walk by. Stavros and his friends do not like foreigners. Near the kiosk entrance sits Stavros’ increasingly senile mother. One day their routine is broken as the mother throws herself into the arms of an Albanian worker – calling him her son, in Albanian. From then on Stavros’ friends view him with suspicion: Is he Greek or Albanian?

Movie: America, America

HSA Cine Club invites you to go back in the 1890's when Elia Kazan (based on his book) directed "America, America", a dramatic, black-and-white movie that narrates the struggles of Stavros (Stathis Giallelis) in emigrating to America. The young, kind-hearted but naive Stavros lived in Anatolia, where the Greek and Armenian minorities were repressed by the majority Turks and he dreamed of a better life, in America, where he could make his parents proud by his grand accomplishments. Instead, his parents, with most of their money, sent him to Constantinople to help fund the carpet shop owned by his first cousin once removed. What Stavros encountered on his journey, made on foot with a small donkey, made him question life in Anatolia even further. Once in Constantinople, his resolve to earn the 110 Turkish pound third class fare to the United States became stronger than ever. But try after try,..

Movie: "Z" by Costa Gavras
5 pm - Structural and Materials Engineering Building, Room 348 [Map]
Z is a 1969 French language political thriller directed by Costa-Gavras, with a screenplay by Gavras and Jorge Semprún, based on the 1966 novel of the same name by Vassilis Vassilikos. The film presents a thinly fictionalized account of the events surrounding the assassination of democratic Greek politician Grigoris Lambrakis in 1963. With its satirical view of Greek politics, its dark sense of humor, and its downbeat ending, the film captures the outrage about the military dictatorship that ruled Greece at the time of its making.
